The Honourable Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, has announced that expanded water distribution to communities across Kano State is expected to begin within the next week, following significant progress in the rehabilitation of key treatment plants, reservoirs, and regional water schemes.
Speaking during an interview with Freedom Radio, Dr. Hashim outlined the steady advances under the administration of His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. He noted that major facilities, including the Challawa Water Treatment Plant (designed to supply approximately 51% of Greater Kano’s demand), Tamburawa, Goron Dutse reservoirs, and several regional schemes that had been dormant for years, are now nearing full operational readiness.

“Work is advancing on schedule,” Dr. Hashim stated. “We are highly optimistic that trial testing and the commencement of broader distribution will start in the coming days. Communities that have endured prolonged scarcity will begin receiving reliable supplies of potable water as these systems come back online.”
Key achievements highlighted include the restoration of transmission lines (including the critical 15.6 km line to Goron Dutse), desilting and rehabilitation of reservoirs with a combined capacity of over 40 million litres, repairs to pumps and filtration units, and the revival of regional schemes such as Guzu-Guzu, Joda, Thomas, and others serving multiple local government areas. Nine of the state’s 19 regional water schemes are currently undergoing restoration, with several already producing water after years of inactivity.
Dr. Hashim emphasised that the efforts form part of a comprehensive strategy to close the daily supply gap estimated at more than 300 million litres for Greater Kano alone while addressing power, equipment, and infrastructure challenges. He reiterated the state government’s commitment to protecting public assets from vandalism and illegal connections so that the restored systems can serve residents sustainably.

The Commissioner also touched on complementary environmental initiatives, including strengthened waste management partnerships, provision of protective equipment for sanitation workers, and ongoing collaboration with stakeholders to support cleaner, more resilient communities.
Residents are encouraged to support these efforts by safeguarding water infrastructure and reporting any illegal activities. Further updates on specific distribution schedules for individual communities will be issued as trial testing concludes and full operations commence.
