The Kano State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting teachers, improving their welfare, and providing a conducive environment for teaching and learning, as part of efforts to strengthen the education sector and build a better society.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf stated this during the celebration of World Teachers’ Day held at the Kano State Government House.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by the Secretary to the Kano State Government, Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, said his administration had taken various measures to improve the education sector.
These, he said, include the recruitment of more teachers, construction of new classrooms, renovation of old schools, and provision of teaching and learning materials.
He added that the government had increased funding for the education sector for three consecutive years, while creating opportunities for teachers to improve their knowledge and skills in the use of modern technology and new teaching methods.
Governor Yusuf further said teachers do not only impart knowledge, describing them as advisers, mentors and nation-builders who play a vital role in promoting good values and character in society.
In his remarks, the Kano State Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Ali Haruna Makoda, stressed the importance of teachers to the development of the education sector.
He said the government was taking appropriate measures to improve teachers’ working conditions and provide them with the necessary tools to perform their duties effectively.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Kano State Chapter, Comrade Baffa Ibrahim, called on the government to continue listening to the concerns of teachers and take measures to improve their welfare and motivate them to discharge their responsibilities effectively.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf also urged teachers and parents to pay closer attention to the behaviour of children, warning that drug abuse poses a serious threat to the future of young people.
He said the state government had established an inter-agency task force to tackle the sale and use of illicit drugs, as well as support the rehabilitation of people affected by drug abuse.
